Who played freddie on icarly

When Nickelodeon's iCarly premiered in 2007, it was an instant hit. The television show, which came from the mind of longtime Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider, followed Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) and Sam Puckett (Jennette McCurdy) as they created a fictional web series. The web series itself was produced by the pals' tech wiz and perpetually grumpy best friend, Freddie Benson, played by a young Nathan Kress. The show had six seasons, a spin-off named Sam & Cat, a made-for-TV film, and a crossover film that included the cast of one of Nickelodeon's other hit shows, Victorious.

The momentum behind the tween show should have catapulted all the stars to fame. And though Miranda Cosgrove has been in a variety of acting projects since then, Nathan Kress all but disappeared from the spotlight following the 2012 conclusion of the show, "iGoodbye." Kress has not landed any major roles since. So, what happened to Freddie?

Miranda Cosgrove had already found success before the show by starring in 2003's School of Rock, alongside Jack Black, and she was savvy enough to not put all her eggs in one basket. As iCarly filmed, Cosgrove booked roles in feature films, notably voicing the character of Margo in the Despicable Me franchise.

In contrast, Kress started out by booking roles on other teen shows, including The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Nickelodeon fare like Drake & Josh. When he landed the role of Freddie, Kress book almost no other major projects throughout the entirety of the show's original run. Exceptions to this were one guest-starring role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2010 and a role in 2008's Gym Teacher: The Movie, opposite Christopher Meloni. The latter was another Nickelodeon project.

When iCarly wrapped, Kress took on guest-starring roles for a few short-lived television shows, including the Jennette McCurdy spin-off, Sam & Cat.

Sticking with one brand may be rewarding, as Kress experienced with his longtime loyalty to Nickelodeon. Three years after playing Freddie on iCarly, Kress' name can be seen in the credits of two other network shows: Henry Danger and Game Shakers. His experience as a faux producer must have helped him get familiar with work behind the camera. He directed 11 episodes for Henry Danger, Nickelodeon's comedy series about a teenager who gets a part-time job helping a superhero. He also took the director's reins for six episodes of Game Shakers, another Dan Schneider project that follows the fictional story of two wildly successful teens, this time in the world of game-making.

Kress has also been charismatic enough to return as himself in both series, as well as a number of Nickelodeon specials, including Throwback with Nickelodeon, which focuses on the nostalgia of old Nick shows, and The After Party, a post-primetime talk show.

A few years after playing Freddie on iCarly, Kress had a role in the 2014 fictional disaster film Into the Storm. He began dating his castmate from the movie, London Elise Moore, and they married in November 2015. In 2017, they had their first child, while in December 2020, Kress announced via his Instagram that the family was now expecting their second child. He was candid in his announcement, sharing that the couple had suffered a number of miscarriages prior to the pregnancy. His Instagram is full of pictures of him with his baby girl and wife, and he has posted very few promotional or, for that matter, staged photos.

His podcast, RadioActive Dads, focuses on working and raising children in Hollywood. The show features Kress, his co-host Brett Davern of MTV's Awkward, and other celebrity parents. The hosts chat about working on set and discuss their evolving perspective as millennials moving into the parenting phase of their lives.

Kress is a big advocate for parenting. He even joined a movement entitled "Man Enough," led by author Justin Baldoni. According to the program, the movement is "founded on the belief that by undefining traditional roles and traits of masculinity, men will be able to realize their potential as humans and their capacity for connection." In 2021, Kress joined a panel for the movement that has premiered on Facebook Watch and IGTV.

Patience is certainly a virtue, as Kress has discovered. In 2020, ET Online reported the ViacomCBS announcement that a reboot of iCarly would premiere on the network's streaming service, Paramount+. The new show will, appropriately, be called iCarly: Revival. The reboot sees the return of Miranda Cosgrove as the titular character, Carly Shay. So far, Jerry Trainor, who played Carly's brother Spencer, and Nathan Kress as Freddie Benson are also set to return. However, Jennette McCurdy has announced that she will not be returning to play Sam Puckett.

In January 2021, Kress posted a photo from the set of the show that features the three returning actors smiling into the camera. As of this writing, the show does not have a release date yet, but a teaser featuring the trio was previously released (TV Web). We're glad to see the cast reunited and we can't wait to see Kress back in the role that first introduced us to him.

Nathan Karl Kress (born November 18, 1992) is an American actor. He was also a professional child model. Kress has acted since the age of three and is best known for his role as Freddie Benson on the Nickelodeon television series iCarly. He was also a guest star on Sam & Cat.

Biography

Early life

Kress was born on November 18, 1992, in Glendale, California.[1] He has two older brothers, Andrew (born October 23, 1987) and Kevin (born May 30, 1990), neither of whom are involved in show business.

Kress began his professional career at the age of four when he displayed a natural talent for memorizing and re-enacting the shows he saw on television, prompting his mother to take him to an open "cattle call" showcase where he was quickly signed with a talent agent. Over the next three years, Kress modeled for various print advertisements, as well as performing in numerous commercials and voice-over roles; the most notable of which was his dual role as the voices of "Easy" and "Tough Pup" in the 1998 feature film Babe: Pig in the City. At the age of six, he decided to take a break from acting and return to regular school, where he led a relatively "normal" life for the next five years until deciding to return to acting professionally at the age of eleven.

Career

At the age of eleven, Kress was cast in the lead role as "The Emperor" in a school production of The Emperor's New Clothes. The role rekindled his interest in performing, and at the end of his fifth grade school year, he asked his parents if he could be home-schooled so he could return to acting. A mutual friend of Kress from school put him in touch with an agent, and after attending a summer acting "boot camp", Kress was soon going on real professional auditions once again.

In April 2005, Kress made his first live television appearance since returning to acting in a comedy sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he played a young Simon Cowell of American Idol, and would continue to appear in various comedy sketches on the show a total of 5 times over the next year. Kress continued to land steady work over the next two years, appearing in guest-starring roles on dramatic series such as House M.D., Standoff, and Without a Trace as well as the Disney Channel comedy series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Kress also appeared in several short films including Pickled, Magnus, Inc., and Bag, for which he was awarded a 168 Film Festival Jury Award for his portrayal of a small-fry drug dealer with a conscience. In addition to live-action roles, Kress continued to work as a voice-actor, lending his voice to various characters in the animated feature film Chicken Little and on the Nickelodeon animated series Shuriken School.

In February 2006, Kress landed a small role on the popular Nickelodeon family series Drake & Josh. He played the role of Toplin, a "geeky" kid at a birthday party with a crush on Drake and Josh's younger sister Megan Parker (played by Miranda Cosgrove) in the episode "Battle of Panthatar". Kress did not know it at the time, but this small role would lead to an opportunity that would catapult him to stardom. While filming his scenes for Drake & Josh, television show creator and executive producer Dan Schneider took an interest in him and called him over to talk with him and to introduce him to some network executives. At the time, Schneider was developing a new series for Nickelodeon, and was on the lookout for someone to play one of the lead roles in the untitled project, which would later become known as iCarly.

The role of Toplin was similar to a character named "Freddie" that Schneider was looking to cast on iCarly. Schneider had been so impressed with Kress' performance that he remembered him, and about 6 months after filming his small role on Drake and Josh, Kress was called in to audition for the role of "Freddie" shortly after his fourteenth birthday. After several rounds of auditions, Kress was invited back for a screen test with Miranda Cosgrove and Jennette McCurdy and a couple of days later he was notified that he had landed the role of "Freddie". Although iCarly would not premiere until the fall of 2007, the decision was made to cut Kress' scenes with Miranda Cosgrove out of the Drake and Josh episode that had started it all, in order to avoid any potential confusion among the young Nickelodeon viewing audience.

On September 8, 2007, iCarly debuted on Nickelodeon and quickly became a fan favorite. On the show, Kress plays Fredward "Freddie" Benson, the technical producer for the fictional web-show iCarly, which stars his character's two best friends, Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) and Samantha "Sam" Puckett (Jennette McCurdy). His character has a crush on the main character Carly, and a feuding, bitter-sweet, love/hate relationship with Carly's best friend and web-show co-star, Sam. The show became Nickelodeon's most-watched show aimed at tweens, and catapulted Kress to international fame among adolescents. Kress' performance on the show has been characterized by one reviewer for Variety as "sweetly nerdy".

In 2008, Kress starred in the Nickelodeon television movie Gym Teacher: The Movie. In the movie, Kress played "Roland", a decidedly uncoordinated student who transfers to a new school and must be whipped into shape by his ambitious gym teacher, Dave Stewie (Christopher Meloni). Later that same year, he starred as Freddie Benson in the television movie iCarly: iGo to Japan, Nickelodeon's first television film adaptation of iCarly television series. Throughout 2009, Kress continued to play the role of Freddie on iCarly, but was unable to take on other projects due to Nickelodeon's decision to film both seasons two and three of the show back-to-back without the usual hiatus between filming seasons, in order to make up for the time lost during the 2008 writers strike.

In March 2010, Kress guest-starred in the CBS television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in season 10: episode 15 titled "Neverland". Kress played Mason Ward, one of two best friends of a fourteen-year-old victim with traces of blood of an inmate under his fingernails. Kress told Fanlala.com of his CSI role "It was a great opportunity to try my hand at something different. I had done scenes in dramas in the past, but other than a few semi-serious scenes on iCarly, it had been a long time since I've had the opportunity to do anything other than comedy." Later that same year, Kress returned to comedic roles, guest-starring as Prince Gabriel on the Nickelodeon comedy series True Jackson, VP, and as the voice of Ronald on the Nickelodeon animated series The Penguins of Madagascar.

In 2011, Kress continued to appear in the role of Freddie Benson on the fourth season of iCarly, and in January 2011, Miranda Cosgrove began telling news sources that she was looking forward to returning to Hollywood to begin filming the fifth season of the main character of the Nickelodeon show. On January 27, 2011 Cosgrove told Cleveland Live News "We're getting ready to start the next season, right after the [Dancing Crazy] tour. I would be willing to do the show as long as people like it and as long as it works." On January 29, 2011, Reuters news agency also reported that Cosgrove was preparing to begin filming season 5, and on February 3, 2011 Cosgrove told The Middletown Press, when speaking of the show and her co-stars, Kress and Jennette McCurdy “I’ve known them since I was little. I can’t wait to get back. I’m really comfortable doing [iCarly]. It’s like my home away from home.”, leading many to conclude that Kress and McCurdy would also be returning for a 5th season of their favorite show. Kress continued to star in the Nickelodeon show until filming ended in June 2012.

In late 2014, Nathan makes his first time as a producer as directing an episode of Henry Danger.[2]

In 2021, he later reprised his role as Freddie Benson again for the revival of iCarly under Paramount+, which sees his character having had two divorces and a failed startup, and had to move back with his mom.

Personal life

As of February 2011, Kress was finishing up his senior year of high school and hoped to attend UCLA, which is his father's alma mater. While filming iCarly, Kress is tutored on the set along with his co-stars Miranda Cosgrove and Jennette McCurdy, and is home-schooled on the weekends or when on hiatus from the shooting of the show. Kress is a fan of the Lord of the Rings films, and his hobbies include football, tennis, which he plays on weekends, air-soft, and video games, as well as an avid interest in photography and acting.

Kress is a devout evangelical Christian and has said that he feels a responsibility to be a great role model to his younger fans. Kress wears a purity ring from his family as a symbol of his vow to remain abstinent until marriage.

His favorite band is Relient K, other bands that he likes are Switchfoot, The Classic Crime, Anberlin, Flyleaf, P.O.D. and Skillet.

On May 29 2015, Kress became engaged to his girlfriend London Elise Moore. The two were married on November 15, 2015. Their first child, a daughter, Rosie Carolyn Kress, was born on December 21, 2017. Their second child, a daughter, Evie Elsie Kress, was born on March 20, 2021.
