Why does my dip nails crack

Why does my dip nails crack

Have you recently gone to the nail salon to get a fresh set of dipping powder only for it to mysteriously crack a few days later? What is the reason why the dip is cracking and how do you fix it?

The main cause of dip powder cracking is due to improper application. It could have been applied too thinly, insufficient activator was used, uneven layers of coating were applied, over-drilling or over-buffing the nails, and using defected or expired products. Dip powder can also crack from any hard impact on the nails.

As you can tell, it is quite a common issue that many clients experienced. Nail techs who are new to using dip powder will likely run into this problem since they will do a step wrong or miss a step entirely.

Let’s go further in-depth and explain the causes and solutions to prevent dip powder from cracking. Below is a list of the main reasons why your dip powder could be cracking.

  • Not Enough Coats
    – Usually, two to three coats of dipping powder is required for a strong, hard finish. Three coats is often preferred since the last step of drilling and buffing will thin the nail down a bit. Using too many coats can equally be as bad as not using enough so be sure to use just the right amount.
  • Not Enough Activator
    – Bottle number 3 (aka Activator) is used to activate a chemical reaction to seal the powder, which will harden it allowing you to file and buff the dip nail. If not enough activator is used, it will leave soft points in the dip nail which can eventually cause it to crack. Make sure to cover the whole nail thoroughly with activator to ensure this problem does not occur.
  • Uneven Layers
    – The dip base is notorious for being applied unevenly. Sometimes if you do not dip the finger into the powder quickly enough, the base can dry too soon and won’t attach to any powder. To fix this problem, apply the base thoroughly on the nail and then immediately dip the finger into the powder at a 45 degree angle. Be sure to dust off any excess powder before applying the next coat to prevent any bumps.
  • Over-drilling and Over-Buffing
    – Drilling or buffing the dip too much can quickly thin it out, resulting in weak points on the dip nail. This can later cause the nail to suddenly crack. If you are applying the dip evenly then you will not need to drill or buff the nail too much. Remember that the top coat will self-level and smooth out the surface of the dip, so you do not need to over-drill or over-buff the nail.
  • Defected Products
    – Keep your dip base coat and all other products stored in a cool environment. Do not let them get too hot or they can dry out and get thick. Make sure all bottles are closed and not exposed to the air. Keep in mind of how long their shelf-life is so that you are always using fresh products on your clients.
  • Hard Impacts
    – If you are a client who are on the receiving end of a cracked dip powder nail, be very careful not to let your nails get hit by any hard impact. Dip powder nails are sturdy, but they can still break and crack if not cautious.

Conclusion

To top it off, always make sure you are doing every step in the dip system correctly. It is very easy for beginners who are new to dip powder to mess up a step. To be extra safe, only use dip products that are originally meant to be dipped. I’ve seen many people used acrylic powder for dipping, which do not have the same powder consistency as dip powder. Make sure to fully understand all the main causes and solutions so you will be confident that your next set of dip powder won’t crack.
