Who has the most fantasy points ever in a game

Gary Davenport@@IDPSharksNFL AnalystNovember 5, 2012

Every once in a while, it happens.

A player has an otherworldly performance in the NFL, translating to the sort of fantasy football outing that single-handedly carries teams to victory.

Week 9 of the 2012 season brought with it such a performance by rookie running back Doug Martin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As we celebrate—or curse—Martin's huge day, and give an honorable mention nod to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's 380-yard, six touchdown explosion against the Tennessee Titans in 2009 (which tied Martin), let's take a look at how that performance stacks up against the greatest single-game fantasy performances of the past decade.

Note: These scores were tabulated using a standard scoring system that awards one point for 10 rushing or receiving yards, 25 passing yards and each reception, six points for all touchdowns and subtracts two points for turnovers.

If Doug Martin's big game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8 was the rookie's coming out party, then his game against the Oakland Raiders was a Mardi Gras of fantasy football greatness.

To say that the Buccaneers tailback gashed the Raiders is like saying that the Grand Canyon is a fairly large ditch.

Martin rolled for 272 total yards, four touchdowns and 51 fantasy points, rushing for over 200 yards in the second half and becoming the first player in the history of the NFL to score three touchdowns on the ground from more than 45 yards out in the same game.

It's once again time to hop in the way-back machine, back to a time when the Seattle Seahawks were just opening a brand new stadium that was then known as Qwest Field.

The place, just as it is today, was rocking back then, due in no small part to performances like the one running back Shaun Alexander put on in the fourth week of the 2002 season.

Alexander, in only the second game ever played at the stadium, set an NFL record with five first-half touchdowns in a rout of the Minnesota Vikings, including a stretch of just over a minute when he scored three times on his way to 52 fantasy points.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was ruthlessly efficient in leading the Green bay Packers to a 15-1 record in 2011, throwing for over 4,600 yards and 45 touchdowns while tossing only six interceptions.

Rodgers threw one of those interceptions in a Week 4 showdown with the Denver Broncos, but Rodgers more than made up for it by passing for 408 yards, running for 36 more, and scoring six total touchdowns on his way to 53 fantasy points in a 49-23 Green Bay victory.

Once upon a time, before first Clinton Portis and then Mike Shanahan plied their trade in the nation's capital, both men were employed of the Denver Broncos, where Shanahan's one-cut rushing attack generated any number of huge fantasy outings from several different players.

With that said, the granddaddy of those big games was an AFC West showdown late in 2003 between the Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, where Portis tallied an eye-popping 54 fantasy points on the heels of 218 rushing yards, 36 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

With Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick on the verge of being benched, it seems like this game happened a million years ago instead of just two.

After returning to football following his prison sentence, Vick enjoyed a magical 2010 season, highlighted by a Monday night game against the Washington Redskins in Week 10.

Vick threw for over 300 yards, ran for over 80, and scored....wait for it...six total touchdowns and a mind boggling 57 fantasy points.

I watched that game, and remember it like it was yesterday.

We'll see if I feel the same way about Martin's game in a few years.

Fantasy football remains one of the best things about any NFL season. Anyone can become a general manager from the comfort of home and make roster moves and waiver wire decisions on a daily basis.

One of the best things about fantasy football is when a player on one's team has a record-setting day. Twenty-twenty-one has brought that concept into focus with the play of Jonathan Taylor. The Indianapolis Colts running back notched 185 yards and four touchdowns and added a fifth as a receiver.

That instantly got fans wondering if this was a new fantasy football record. To analyze that question, we need to break it up into standard fantasy football scoring and PPR scoring. PPR stands for points per reception, which is a scoring format that leads to higher weekly totals.

Highest points scorer in Fantasy Football in one game in H2H

Taylor finished with 50.4 points in standard fantasy football leagues. That is an absurd amount, but still not a record. Clinton Portis holds that record from a 2003 game in which he finished with 254 yards and five touchdowns.

Taylor's performance ranks fifth. He is one of five players to reach the 50-point threshold in standard fantasy football formats.

  1. Clinton Portis - 55.4 points (Denver Broncos vs. Kansas CIty Chiefs, 12/7/2003)
  2. Alvin Kamara - 53.2 points (New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings, 12/25/2020)
  3. Jamaal Charles - 51.5 points (Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders, 12/15/2013)
  4. Doug Martin - 51.2 points (Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Oakland Raiders, 11/4/2012)
  5. Jonathan Taylor - 50.4 points (Indianapolis Colts vs. Buffalo Bills, 11/21/2021)

Sorry we’re fixing this right now (we blame Jonathan Taylor).

Highest points scorer in Fantasy Football in one game in PPR

So what about PPR leagues? Taylor gets bumped down the list a bit further, even though he had 53.4 points in this format in Week 11. Once again, that is a mind-blowing total. The all-time leader is Jamaal Charles, with a 59.5-points performance back in 2012. Portis' performance ranks third in PPR, and Taylor is eighth.

Running backs who are also prolific pass-catchers have an advantage in PPR fantasy football leagues. Let's go back to the standard format for a minute. Taylor put up nearly all of his points as a runner, as he only had three receptions on the day.

  1. Jamaal Charles - 59.5 points (Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders, 12/15/2013)
  2. Tyreek Hill - 57.9 points (Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 11/29/2020)
  3. Clinton Portis - 57.4 points (Denver Broncos vs. Kansas City Chiefs, 12/7/2003)
  4. Alvin Kamara - 56.2 points (New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings, 12/25/2020)
  5. Chris Johnson - 55.4 points (Tennessee Titans vs. Houston Texans, 9/20/2009)

Diving into the all-time leaderboard reveals some memorable performances fans may have forgotten about as time has passed. Perhaps, the most impressive came back in 2010 when Michael Vick finished with 49.3 points as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are also high on the all-time list with 46.3-point performances.

It takes a lot for a quarterback to score that much in fantasy football, and an opposing team is doomed if a fantasy owner is lucky enough to get more than 40 points from their quarterback. Anything over 35 is usually enough to seal a victory.

Who has the most fantasy points ever in a game

Michael Vick, Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky all have something in common - they've had a few of the greatest fantasy football single-game quarterback performances of all time. Most fantasy owners probably have fond memories of one particularly huge game by one of their players, or a monster game from that cost you a win in a given week. To look back on some of those, we've laid out the top-10 fantasy games ever, broken down by position (QB, RB, WR, TE, Kicker).

Our data comes from Football Reference's Game Finder tool. We set our parameters to date back to the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, so Otto Graham and Jim Brown won't make the list. But a few old-timers find their way on here with performances that would likely be remembered even more if fantasy football had been prominent in those decades.

There were some tough near-misses - among the QBs in the next 10 were the legendary trio of Eric Hipple, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Joe Namath. Adrian Peterson's 296-yard rushing day missed out because he didn't quite find the end zone enough. And because this is non-PPR scoring, Terrell Owens gets ripped off from his 20-catch, 283-yard day in 2000, in part due to managing just one touchdown that day.

Note: The scoring accounts for 4-point passing touchdowns, 6-point rushing and receiving touchdowns, 0.04 points per passing yard and 0.1 points per rushing and receiving yard.
