Maddie sat in her bedroom with her phone debating what to say. She had been crushing hard on a guy named Austin and they had been talking for a couple months. A few minutes before, she received a text from Austin that said, “Since we’ve been talking for awhile now, I’d like to get to know you even more. Can you send me pics?” She knew she should tell him no, but she was feeling a whirlwind of emotions and wasn’t sure exactly how to put it in writing. She knew if she simply said, “no,” he would respond with, “Why not” and didn’t know how to explain it. Have you or a friend ever been in Maddie’s situation? Let’s be honest here. The “photos” we’re talking about are nudes or semi-nude pictures, and there’s a growing number of guys asking for them. So how do you answer the “Why not?” question without stumbling? As Emily says, there’s no reason to tip toe around the issue or want to save his feelings. It’s clear that if he’s asking you for photos, he merely sees you as an object to be used and only “cares” about your feelings to get what he wants. Be direct in what you’re saying. Do not over explain yourself or make up excuses. Afterwards, you can either expect insults or no response at all. If he chooses the insulting route, ignore him/block him from your phone.
