What to expect from the 49ers vs. Packers game?

The last unique game before a Sunday of regular-season rematches, the 49ers look to take their Cinderella story one step further. It’s one thing to be victorious as the underdog when you’re the only underdog being picked, but it’s another to actually pull off a surprising upset. If San Francisco wins this game, it will be a surprising upset.

While the Packers traveled to San Francisco in 2019, they are fresh off of a disappointing home NFC Championship loss to the Buccaneers in 2020. With the opportunity to host again, the Packers would play in their third straight NFC Championship Game with a win tonight.

Rodgers has been surgical this season, throwing 37 touchdowns to just 4 interceptions. The backfield has seen a split between RBs Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. Finally, Davante Adams continues to be one of the best WRs in the league. Green Bay will need a consistent four quarters from the rest of the receiving corps to feel comfortable tonight.

Can the 49ers’ defense cause enough havoc tonight vs. the Packers?

Obviously, every 49ers fan is holding their breath in anticipation of the news of DE Nick Bosa’s status for the Divisional Round. While his presence will help, the 49ers’ defense is built to make an impact with or without him.

San Francisco was able to keep pressure on Dallas in the Wild Card round even after Bosa and LB Fred Warner’s injuries. While having the league leader in tackles for loss would be extremely helpful, the 49ers should still generate pressure.

The question will be how ready is offensive tackle David Bakhtiari? The Packers’ lineman has been sidelined the entire season after suffering a torn ACL. He returned for Green Bay’s Week 18 finale to grab some snaps before postseason action, but he hasn’t played a full 60 minutes yet this season. The veteran has plenty of experience, so this matchup will be extremely intriguing to watch.

The Packers are getting healthy at the right time but face quite the showdown for their first postseason matchup. The 49ers’ offensive scheme has proved tricky for many this season. Can Green Bay hold up against San Francisco? The return of LB Za’Darius Smith is tantalizing for this matchup as well. Rodgers gets the job done at home in this 49ers vs. Packers classic and prepares to host the NFC Championship Game in back-to-back seasons.

49ers vs. Packers Prediction: Packers 35, 49ers 27

It’s been a wild season for the Green Bay Packers. They have their customary 13 wins with another game left to play, home field advantage in the playoffs, and the sole first-round bye in the NFC playoff bracket. Aaron Rodgers has put together an MVP-caliber season, and the task is now on Matt LaFleur to ensure that the playoffs going through Lambeau pays off for the Packers, who haven’t made the Super Bowl since 2011.

On Sunday, they go up against the Detroit Lions, who are ready for the season to be over so they can just move on. The Lions, 2-13-1 on the season, have shown a lot of fight under first-time head coach Dan Campbell, but the talent on the roster simply hasn’t been there. Amon-Ra St. Brown has emerged into a strong receiver for the Lions, but there are clearly a lot of holes on this roster that need to be filled.

The Packers have indicated they’ll be playing their starters in Week 18, as they look to carry momentum into the playoffs. Davante Adams is coming off of a big week against the Vikings, catching 11 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings were simply overpowered by the Packers on “Sunday Night Football,” with Green Bay easily picking up a 37-10 win to clinch the NFC regular season title.

They’ll need all the support they can get in a deep conference. The Rams, Buccaneers, and Cowboys have all been formidable all year, with the Cardinals also getting off to the league’s hottest start. The Packers have lost in the NFC Championship Game in each of the past two years, so the obvious goal is to avoid losing in the postseason a third straight year after a standout regular season.
