A common misconception about Michael Jackson is that his middle name is Joseph, after Joseph Jackson, but his middle name is actually listed as Joe on his passport and on most legal documents, including even his birth certificate according to Jermaine Jackson. Even though the name conveniently fits into Joseph's family, I think Smokey gave him the middle name Joe and Diana gave him his first name Michael. The reason I believe this is because Smokey's real name is William and he got the nickname "Smokey Joe" from his uncle, and once Smokey started using that name he dropped off the "Joe". So Smokey then gave the middle name to his first son Michael Jackson to pay homage to his favorite uncle. The reason I believe Diana named him Michael is because one of her biggest inspirations is the Renaissance artist Michaelangelo, and in Michael's autobiography Moonwalk he writes about how she used to take him out as a kid to museums and introduce him to the work of artists like Michaelangelo and Degas. I hold this belief firmly because Michael's name is a lot more traditional than all of Joseph's children who came before him who all had very untraditional first and middle names. After noticing how the middle name made Michael blend into the family better and tied Michael's legacy to his name, Joseph then gave his daughter Janet the middle name Jo and started training her to be an entertainer as well. Michael then used the same trick on his first two children, whose middle names are Joseph and Katherine, to make them appear more as his own children even though they (probably) weren't and to reinforce the coverup of him not actually being a Jackson.
