How to write Bachelor degree after name

Upon graduating from college and receiving a degree in their desired field, many people choose to sign their names with the addition of their degree included at the end of their name. For example, doctors typically sign "M.D." or "Ph.D." after their names, depending on what kind of doctorate they have attained. For someone with a Bachelor of Science degree, it is more uncommon to include it after signing your name, however, it is done.

Sign your full name.

Sign "B.Sc." or "B.S." at the end of your name, after a comma. Both designations are used and both are correct.

Step 3

Include the title of your degree if you wish. If you are writing a scholarly paper that will be published, you might want to include the type of B.S. degree you have, especially if it is directly relevant to the topic you are writing about. This will verify your expertise in the subject. For example, if you are publishing a paper relevant to the field of criminal justice, you may wish to sign your name with a "B.S., Criminal Justice" at the end.

The correct way to communicate your degree to employers and others is by using the following formats:

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Undergraduate Degrees

  • Bachelor of Science Degree
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree

Examples:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree
    Major: English

Graduate Degrees

  • Master of Science Degree
  • Master of Arts Degree
  • Master of Education Degree
  • Master of Business Administration

Examples:

  • Master of Arts Degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Master of Education Degree
    Specialization: Secondary Education

Double Majors - You will not be receiving two bachelor's degrees if you double major. Your primary major determines the degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). If you're not fully sure which of your majors is primary, check CheckMarq or call the registrar's office.

Example:

Primary Major: Psychology; Secondary Major: Marketing

  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Marketing

Example:

Primary Major: Marketing; Secondary Major: Psychology

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing & Psychology

In a letter, you may shorten your degree by writing it this way:

  • In May 20XX, I will graduate with my Bachelor's degree in International Affairs.
  • In December 20XX, I will graduate with my Master's degree in Counseling Education.

You can add the field of study to the letters that describe your award, if, for instance, you undertook a specialisation within your degree.

Example: Bachelor of Social Science (Media Studies) equates to BSocSc(Media Studies)

Exceptions: Bachelor of Laws equates to LLB and Master of Laws equates to LLM

The recommended order is the lower qualifications directly after your name, leading to the highest qualifications.

Example: J Smith DipBus, BBus

Institution name

The name of the awarding institution should also follow your academic qualifications. If you hold multiple qualifications from the one institution then you just list it after all of the qualifications from that institution, not after each qualification.

Example: J Smith DipBus, BBus RMIT, MBA, PhD Swinburne

Professional qualifications

If you are a member of a professional association, you may be entitled to include the postnominals for that association after your academic postnominals.

Example: J Smith BEng, PhD, Swinburne, FIEAust

Double degrees and dual awards

Graduates of double degrees or dual awards are entitled to use postnominals for both programs, separated by a slash. In the case of dual awards, the order should commence with the lowest qualification, leading to the highest.

Example: J Smith BSc(Biotechnology)/BBus Swinburne

Honours

Students who have undertaken an honours program, should list this after the qualification and study descriptor, and before the field of study descriptor (if applicable).

Example: J Smith MSc(Hons) (Network Systems) or J Smith BInfTech(Hons)
