I've gotten lash extensions twice now. The first time 70% of the lashes on my left side fell out by the end of the 2nd week. My right eye only lost maybe 10%. When I went for the fill I talked with the girl doing them and she suspected I sleep more on my left side. So I started sleeping with a neck pillow that prevented me from putting pressure on my eyes. This morning, I lost about 6 extensions, all from the left side again! I'm cleaning them gently after exercise, I didn't get them wet for 48 hours. I'm at a loss. I really love having them and I hate wearing mascara. But I need to find a way to make this work.
This is a question a get A LOT with clients who are due for a fill. And unfortunately, it can be due to numerous reasons, and it's the nature of the beast.
So I'll list the top 10 reasons of why clients may lose more lash extensions on one eye, rather than the other or both. _______________________________________________________________________________ 1.) Sleeping This is especially true if you are a side sleeper or belly sleeper. If you favor one side more than the other, chances are, you may lose more on one eye rather than the other. This also stands true for belly sleepers. If you can't get comfortable sleeping on your back, or like the dead, I suggest in purchasing a satin or silk pillow case. Most the time clients will lose extensions due to the material of there pillow case. Cotton and other materials, can actually snag the extensions or bonds, making them fall out faster. With silk or satin, they will slide and never get snagged. Even getting a message can be an issue. If your face has to go down in the table "hole" during a massage, you may squishing your lashes. 2.) Playing with your lashes (consciously and/or subconsciously)
I've done it, and I know most of my clients have done it too. It's OK, we're all culprits of not being able to follow the rules :)/ Eyelash extensions feel awkward when they begin to grow out and start to have a mind of there own. And the bonds can feel like leftover mascara, that will make all "pickers" want to given in and pick away. Even rubbing your eyes after waking up or yawning can cause any client to lose lashes. And by the time we have realized what we have done, it may be too late. Now, if someone is blatantly playing with there lashes with there fingers, just know, the oil in your fingers will break down the oil based bonds, which will make the extensions come off faster. Ekk. 3.) Too much make-up or Too much oil based products being used
4.) Bangs Now this is one that some people don't think about, but I believe bangs have something to do with out subconscious when it comes to our extensions. Like #2, I think when someone has bangs, side bangs or straight, we tend to be rubbing our eyes or brushing away our hair from our eyes constantly. Another thing I have noticed, for women, when you have side bangs, usually you focus on one eye rather than the other. One eye may less because of brushing away the bangs from one side, rather than the other. Pin em back, or make sure to style them so they are out of your eyes, lashes, and face so they are comfortable :). 5.) It's been awhile since a new set (fills)
6) Length Lashes/ Weight of Extensions Like #5, fills can be a culprit, but that also means, it may also be the technician. Depending on what lashes or weights the technicians are using, the extensions could possibly be a different or heavier weight, meaning they may be too heavy for natural lashes to carry, or may be to heavy for the extensions to hold on too. Your technician should be walking you through options and choices, but also keeping in mind every clients natural integrity for lashes and extensions. Example, if someone wanted "Texas" lashes, which to me are fairly dramatic, long, FULL, full, and full (did I say full?), but there natural lash base is in poor condition or integrity, that may not work. Keep in mind, those clients can eventually "work there way" to that style, but it may be in the best interest to keep the integrity of the lashes. With that being said, usually heavier or the extra long extensions, can have issues. Some natural lashes that are say for example 5mm, those lashes may only hold up to a 15mm. I have always learned that lashes can only hold up to x3 times there own length (for some selected weights). Some natural lashes may be longer in one area, than the other, or the lashes may be longer on one eye than the other, making the bonds last longer for the extra length for them to hold on too. With lengths and weights being in mind (or semi-mink/synthetic mink), now you'll know not to be lopsided. Ask your technician what product they are using on you, lengths, and sizes. Don't be afraid to ask questions, because in all honesty, they should be asking you these questions. If they aren't able to communicate, I would look for a new tech. 7.) Your natural lash cycle Unfortunately, sometimes it's no the extensions or the technician, but mother nature that clients have to battle. Some clients may have more natural lashes one one eye, than the other. Some clients may have trauma, scaring, or other issues that may make lash patterns uneven. Natural lash cycles may also be fast. Meaning, you natural growth of your lashes cycle faster, meaning you may lose lashes faster. Sometimes that's true for both eyes, sometimes one more than the other. Because everyone's bodies grows differently, unfortunately we have to cooperate with mother nature. But what clients can look out for are things that may contribute to there fast cycle. Such as vitamins or medications that could tamper with speeding up the process of someones lash cycle naturally. If you have concerns, check with your doctor and lash tech. 8.)Lash Products Similar to makeup, cosmetics, and skincare, there are also other lash products to be weary about. Avoid using tools like a lash curler, or products like lash serums or lash proteins. This will make eyelashes grow at a fast rate, which can lead to lopsided problems. The lash curler can bunch lashes together pulling them out or breaking the bonds. With not knowing, you could lose more or one eye rather than the other, with any of those products. Be careful! I wouldn't recommend any serums or tools at this time. Avoid any other lash services for the time being as well, such as lash tinting, semi-permanent mascara, or other services. 9.) Sweat, Humidity, Steam, Pools, and Spas Clients who go to the gym, are active, active in water sports, or like to relax in the pool, spa, or jacuzzi..............not so fast! Anytime you introduce sweat, oil based, naturally, your lashes like examples 2 ad 3, your lash extensions can come off faster because of the oil based eyelash extension adhesive. Oil and oil mixes together. Meaning if you introduce oil or oil based products to the bonds, they can break down and come off faster. But just because water and oil don't mix, doesn't mean water or steam isn't something to ignore either. Steam and water can break down the bonds, with natural wear and tear. But the higher the humidity, the more likely lashes may not want to last. Chemicals or products in water, like chlorine in pools or jacuzzis, or salt from the ocean, can also be factors with the same issues. These are some normal "wear and tare factors", but if someone is an avid swimmer, gymnast, etc. Than the higher the risk of lashes no wanting to last as long. 10.) Scrubbing/Exfoliating/Washing the face excessively A lot of my clients are guilty of this. And that's ok, because I've done it too. But it doesn't mean that its good. Like me, some people just like to deep clean. Even if that means scrubbing my face like it's covered in magic marker after a party. (haha) But a big problem with the harsh motions, is that lash extensions can get caught on the wash cloth or loofa, and snag or get yanked out. If someone is washing there face with there hands and rubbing excessively, the friction alone can cause the same damage as the cloth or loofah. Instead of rubbing the face excessively, try to rub around the eyes, and rinse gently. To get eye makeup off, use a gentle oil free make up remover or wipes. ____________________________________________________________________________ Hopefully clients and technicians can find a solution for this persistent problem, or have a better understanding of why these things happen.
