Breakin' my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
A breakin' my back just to know your name
But Heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink, you might miss
'Cause Heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said Heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight (hoo hoo)
Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight Well somebody told me you had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential Ready let's roll onto something new
Takin' it's toll then I'm leaving without you
'Cause Heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said Heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight (hoo hoo)
Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight Well somebody told me you had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential A rushing, rushing around Pace yourself for me (for me)
I said maybe, baby, please (please)
But I just don't know now (baby, baby)
When all I want to do is try Well somebody told me you had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential A rushing, rushing around Now somebody told me you had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential A rushing, rushing around Somebody told me you had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential, I've got potential A rushing, rushing around

Wanting to appeal to both sexes, the Killers wrote the androgynous lyric "You had a boyfriend/Who looked like a girlfriend." "This is the story of trying to meet someone in a club," Brandon Flowers said about the debut single from the Las Vegas band's first album, Hot Fuss. For the Killers' follow-up full-length, Sam's Town, Flowers consciously shifted to creating more compelling material. "There are people who want us to write 'Somebody Told Me' again, and we just don't want that," the band's frontman told Rolling Stone. "There's always a place for fun songs, but then there are the songs that give people chills. I like those more." © 2022 PMC. All rights reserved.
“Somebody Told Me” mainly focuses on the struggles experienced by the narrator in an attempt to gain the other party’s attention. As the lyrics show, the writer could be talking about a love interest he is flirting with. At the same time, he could metaphorically be referring to the struggles of songwriters. In the first verse, the narrator talks about possibly being at a dance club trying so hard to woo a woman he’s interested in. Since she is being rather difficult, he expresses how he’s tired of trying after at least 17 songs playing in the background, which could signify the amount of time he has spent flirting. He further attempts to convince this girl by suggesting that they have both dated people with similar characteristics, thus they might fit perfectly since they have comparable attractions. On the other hand, the singer may be talking about the fact that he works so hard to write songs and is getting tired because even after producing 17 songs, none of them seems to be a hit. He further states in the chorus that someone else already has a track that is quite similar to the one he is creating. He continues to suggest that he never thought the rumor of this similar previous song could ruin his own song. And as such, he’ll probably put that song away altogether, start a new one and keep trying. Facts about “Somebody Told Me”Appearing on the band’s “Hot Fuss” album, “Somebody Told Me” was officially released on 15th March, 2004. The Killers released it as the second single from the album, following “Mr. Brightside“. Brandon Flowers and his bandmates are the sole writing team behind “Somebody Told Me”. They went on to work with music producer Jeff Saltzman to produce the song. The Killers actually released this song on two different occasions. The second release was largely due to the fact that the first release performed poorly (commercial-wise). Release #1 happened in March 2004 whereas release #2 occurred in January of 2005. It was the latter release that transformed this song into one of the most successful songs of 2005. Release #1 took the song to position 28 in Britain’s official singles chart, giving the band their first top-40 hit on this very important chart. However, release #2 gave them even greater chart success, for it took the song all the way to a peak position of 3 on this very vital British record chart. “Somebody Told Me” was also very successful outside Britain. For example, in the following countries, it was a top 10 hit: Actually, in the latter country, it reached the very impressive position of 2. This is therefore one of the Killers’ most significant hits in Scotland. In the United States (on the Hot 100), “Somebody Told Me” enjoyed a modest peak position of 51. Grammy NominationsOne of the biggest accolades of this song was receiving two Grammy nominations in 2005. In one of these nominations, it contested with five other songs for “Best Rock Song”. However, it and the songs listed below lost to U2’s “Vertigo“.

It was released as the second official single from the group's debut studio album Hot Fuss (2004), and was written by band members Brandon Flowers, Mark Stoermer, Dave Keuning and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Brandon Flowers said: "This is the story of trying to meet someone in a club."[3] It is written in the key of B-flat minor.
When the Killers first started out, their music was little noticed by music buyers and the media, which is why "Somebody Told Me" has been released twice in slightly different forms. The first, with the pink background cover, is the rarer version of the single as it was their first release of it; due to poor sales, not as many were produced. When re-released, the cover art sported a blue background color and is the more common version of the single. The single peaked at number 51 on the United States Billboard Hot 100. In the United Kingdom, it charted at number 28 upon its first release in March 2004, becoming the band's first hit in the Top 40, it was then re-released in January 2005 and reached number three. In Australia, the song was ranked number four on Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2004. In 2009, it was voted at number nine in XFM's Top 100 Songs of the Decade. Stylistically, "Somebody told Me" has been cited as alternative rock,[4] new wave,[5] and dance-rock.[6] The song is in the verse-chorus form. The intro of the song is a B♭m chord, leading into the first verse, which consists of a B♭m–E♭m–B♭ chord progression repeated twice, followed by a pre-chorus of G♭–A♭–B♭m chord progression repeated twice. The chorus follows the B♭m–G♭–A♭–F chord progression repeated twice. The first time through the chorus, the last F chord is cut off. The song has a second verse and chorus, then has a bridge with the chord progression E–G♭–B–E–B–E–A♭m–G♭–E–E♭–G♭, which leads into the chorus for a final time.[7] Billboard called the song "wildly infectious",[8] and "as addictive as nickel slots".[9] Blender asserted that the single is a "superb blaze of synthesizers and guitars that builds to the year's best one-liner: 'Somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend I had in February of last year.'"[10] Entertainment Weekly hailed the single as "three smashingly punchy minutes of garage pop so tightly wound that singer Brandon Flowers seems to be accusing his girl of cheating on him with another woman."[11] Rolling Stone said the single was a "nightclub anthem in the making" and continued, "the acid-tongued 'Somebody Told Me' blasts into outer space on a wave of synthesizers and singer Brandon Flowers' cheeky chorus."[12] Michael Paoletta of Billboard praised the remixes done by, respectively, Josh Harris and King Unique for "maintaining the original song's integrity" but recommended readers to buy the album, Hot Fuss, rather than the single.[13] In 2020, Paste ranked the song number six on their list of the 20 greatest Killers songs,[14] and in 2021, American Songwriter ranked the song number three on their list of the 10 greatest Killers songs.[15] The music video for "Somebody Told Me", was filmed in February 2004 in California, and was directed by Brett Simon. It shows the Killers performing their song in the moonlight of a desert location, with a giant LED screen displaying rolling, and flashing images of their logo, as well as an alternate version of the video shot during the day. The imagery in the video pays homage to that of "Crystal" by English alternative dance group New Order; the Killers named themselves after the fictitious band performing in the New Order video. The band performed the song during an appearance on an episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Topher Grace in 2005.[16] They also performed the song at the Sideshow Lollapalooza in June 2011.[17]
The song can be heard in the episode of Six Feet Under, "Grinding the Corn", from 2004.[16] The song appears as a master track in Rock Band 4. The song also appears in the background in a bar in a scene from the movie Rocky Balboa. In 2017, Italian rock band Måneskin covered the song live on Italian X Factor,[60] and released it on their EP Chosen (2017). It reached number 58 on the Italian FIMI chart and number 35 on the nation's Musica e dischi chart.[61][62] In 2020, American metalcore band Motionless in White released a cover of the song.
