MeepCity is a social hangout/role-play experience created by alexnewtron. It is styled after casual children's MMOs and shows off features inspired by Disney's Toontown Online and Club Penguin, as well as many references to them. Alexnewtron has played these games a lot in his youth, and it is likely that they hold a special place in his heart which then became an inspiration for MeepCity. On February 16, 2022, MeepCity was put under review after news reports of adult content abuse in Roblox were published. MeepCity reopened on the same day but without Parties, an in-experience feature commonly used for online dating. Accomplishments
ContributorsAccording to the description, here are the developers: GameplayThe main purpose of the game is being a social or roleplay hangout. This means buying items or playing games is completely optional. There is a currency called coins. Coins are used to customize your house (such as colors, structure, and furniture), buy and customize a pet Meep, or buying fishing rods. It is very similar to Club Penguin.
There are ways to get coins:
FishingFishing is a way to get coins. There are fishing areas on The Playground or The Neighborhood. Fishing areas have a source of water and multiple piers. To fish, the player must walk onto an unoccupied fishing pier. After going onto the pier, they are equipped with a fishing rod. There are "dark spots" on the lake, meaning there is fish in that area. Players must cast their line onto the dark spot, or have the dark spot come to their cast line, to obtain a fish. To do that, they must aim at the dark spot and charge up power. The more power they have, the farther their line will be thrown. When a player cast their line onto a dark spot or when a dark spot heads towards their cast line, they will obtain a fish. Some fish are more valuable than others and will sell for more coins. Players can only have a limited amount of fish (20 fish maximum) before their bucket is full. To sell the fish, they must go to the Pet Shop, go up to the counter, select the "Sell Fish" button, and select the fish they want to sell. Players can also go to The Fisherman in The Playground to sell fish. Selling fish frees up space, meaning players can fish again until their bucket is full. The PlaygroundThe Playground is the area where players can spawn in when then join a server. In addition, The Playground is the main hub to go to different locations in MeepCity (i.e. The Neighborhood, The Plaza, and Town). The Playground has two fishing areas, two morphs (teen and kid), the Parties portal, the Pet Shop, a furniture store, the Toys Stand, the Home Improvement store, and several benches to sit on. The Fisherman is also here. Pet ShopThe Pet Shop is where players adopt Meeps, buy Meep-related items, and sell their fish.Meeps are sold for 100 coins and the player can only buy one Meep. When choosing a Meep, players can choose what will be the Meep's name and which color they want their Meep to be. The Meeps are inspired by Puffles from Club Penguin, mainly due to their shape and eyes. It is also said the inside is based on Club Penguin's Pet Shop's interior, for example, the rug. Accessories for the Meep can be bought in the Pet Shop as well, included but not limited to:
Players can also buy Meep furniture, or known as Meep toys, for their Meep at their house.:
Players can also buy different types of fishing rods. The available fishing rods the player can use are:

MinigamesParties PortalThe Parties Portal is where players can create or choose and join parties hosted by Plus members. It is in between the gateways to Town and to the Plaza. Players cannot join a server with more than 50 members. To join or create a party, the player must walk up to the portal of the Parties portal. It will show a list of concurrent parties. Players can toggle whether or not they want to see full parties (parties that already have 50 members) by the checkbox on the top right corner inside of the GUI. Below the GUI is a button that lets players create a party. On February 16, 2022, this feature was removed entirely off the platform due to most popular parties introducing sexualized avatars, mature themes and inappropriateness. MeepCity RacingMeepCity Racing is a racing minigame styled after the Mario Kart series. Players can race on three available tracks, use items to attack others or defend themselves, customize their kart, and earn coins. MeepCity: Star BallMeepCity: Star Ball is an obstacle course minigame containing four maps, each with 6 levels. The minigame originally was released prior to MeepCity as a standalone game, and Meeps looked different. Originally, Meeps could be customized and there was a shop in Star Ball. CriticismDespite the game's friendly appearance, its popularity amongst many players, and the creator working at Roblox, the majority of players outside its community dislike it. One of their main reasons is that the game is often infested with online daters and sexual content, especially in parties. Usually, the people creating the parties use it for inappropriate purposes, such as sexual interactions, which is against the rules of Roblox. Online daters would often name their parties "Find a Humannnnn" or "Find Hubby and have fun". Because of this, the player can no longer give their party a name or add beds to their party, although beds were reimplemented back on August 25, 2021. The reimplementation of beds was welcomed by online daters who continued using them inappropriately. Alexnewtron has also received criticism in relation to these events, as he has done not much to stop the online dating issue. His additions of the pillar, option for party owners to kick users and reimplementation of beds in parties both have benefited online daters, as users now use pillars to recreate pole dancing, the kick option often being used to remove anti-online daters (players who are against online dating) and imitate sexual interactions on beds. MeepCity also received some backlash after the update where a player can turn into a teenager or a kid. Because of the update, people have compared to and labeled the game as games lots of online daters play such as "Adopt and Raise a Kid." MeepCity has also been criticized for its similarities to the now shut-down Disney games Toontown Online and Club Penguin. The fishing minigame and the tunnel animation have often been said to be "ripped straight from Toontown", and Meeps are nearly identical to Puffles from Club Penguin, the face texture being illegally copied from a Disney asset, which eventually made its way into official Roblox merchandise. Disney no longer enforces Toontown or Club Penguin copyright due to the site being shut down, however, they would legally be able to sue Roblox for copyright infringement due to MeepCity's profit off of stolen assets. MeepCity's recent updates (as of January 28, 2017) have attracted more online daters[citation needed]. This caused some of MeepCity's veterans to lose interest and stop playing the game. It is also said that MeepCity is the reason why some news reports are calling Roblox "the center for child predators", as many news articles feature pictures and stories from MeepCity. On February 29, 2020, the game was briefly hacked by a hacker called 'tubers93' and teleported players to an alternate MeepCity hub with morbid themes and a pinata of what appeared to be alexnewtron's avatar that could be hit with a bat to produce +18 screams as well as preventing players from leaving through the in-game menu by replacing the buttons with their own invisible redirects. Among other issues such as avatars being morphed into resembling infamous German war criminals and players being given exorbitant amounts of Coins, before the hackers were stopped by Roblox they also made the game teleport to a place where players could eat a sandwich and then be kicked out after doing so. On February 16, 2022, shortly after reopening after being placed under review, presumably the same hackers returned and changed players avatars and Coin counts. As mentioned earlier, parties were finally removed on February 16, 2022, due to the game being shut down and put under moderation review. TriviaThis section is a trivia section.
