To unlock fully playable versions of Doom 1 & Doom 2 on your copy of DOOM Eternal — you’ll need to unlock the Fortress of DOOM hub. You’ll unlock most of the interior after completing the second mission.

Travel down and you’ll find a special office that’s full of Easter eggs — it’s like a bedroom where all the Doomguy’s collectibles are stored on shelves. There’s a special computer here you can access with two mysterious “?” files on it. Those two files are the fully playable, complete versions of Doom 1 and Doom 2.

To unlock them, complete the requirements below.

  • How To Unlock Doom 1: Complete the campaign of DOOM Eternal.
  • How To Unlock Doom 2: Input the code ‘FLYNNTAGGART’

It takes a while to unlock Doom 1, but you can grab Doom 2 as early as the third mission. You can even use the cheat codes you’ve unlocked on those games — just access the cheats menu on this old-school computer to toggle the settings you want to use.

So, you’re probably asking… who is Flynn Taggart? That’s the Doomguy’s name in the completely ridiculous Doom series of novels. Those books are some serious nonsense, and by the end, go completely off-the-rails with insanity. Flynn is such a cool guy, he’s known as ‘Fly’ to his friends. He was court-martialed for refusing to open-fire on civilians in a middle-eastern country.

Also, in the books, it turns out that the demons aren’t actually responsible for the hellish invasion of Earth — it’s actually an alien species known as the ‘Freds’. The series ends with Flynn Taggart and pals invading Fredworld, discovering that belief in Mormonism can save them from alien viruses, and Flynn ‘Fly’ Taggart is worshipped as a god by a rag-tag group of cultist humans. Yes, really.

Well, enjoy Doom 2 everybody!

Doom Eternal is already a love letter to the series in many ways, but it actually contains the first two classic games in the series as an easter egg. Both games, Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth, are fully playable within Doom Eternal, and they’re not too difficult to unlock. Here’s how to play classic Doom games in Doom Eternal.

How to Play the Original Doom

In order to be able to play the original Doom, you first need to unlock all the cheat codes in Doom Eternal. You’ll have to collect all 14 floppy disk collectibles throughout the game’s main campaign in order to do so. Because there are cheat code floppy disks on just about every mission in Doom Eternal, you’ll also have to complete the main campaign before you can start playing the classic Doom game. Once you’ve completed your floppy collection, however, head back to the Fortress of Doom and make your way to the Doomslayer’s room. It’s in the lower portion of the ship, and you’ll know you’re in the right place if you see the guitars on the wall.

There’s an old school computer on the desk. Interact with it, and if you’ve met all the requirements, you should see an icon for Doom on the left side of the screen. If there’s still an icon of a floppy disk with a question mark on the left side, you’re missing some cheat codes. This version of Doom is actually The Ultimate Doom, the final version of the game released in 1995 that contains several additional levels.

How to Play Doom II: Hell on Earth

Doom II is much easier to access. You don’t have to complete the campaign or find any collectibles to play it. Instead, playing Doom II only requires a password. Head the Doomslayer’s room in the Fortress of Doom and interact with his old computer. Select the square on the right side with the floppy icon and question mark. You’ll be prompted to enter a 12 character password. Enter FLYNNTAGGART. Doom II should then boot up and remain unlocked at the computer.

The option to play the 1994 classic version of Doom II: Hell on Earth is also initially disabled in Doom Eternal. You need to get back to the PC located in Doom Slayer's quarters aboard the Fortress of Doom.

This time you have to choose File 2 - a square on the right with a question mark and a floppy disk icon.

You will be prompted to enter a password - the secret code required to unlock Doom 2 is FLYNNTAGGART. Pick the letters one by one until you can type in the password.

If you have entered the password correctly, the Doom 2 icon will appear where File 2 is located. Select it.
