How to get horses in boats minecraft

I'm out doing mapping stuff with my horse and I've come to an area where I need to cross water. No problem, right, just ride the horse into the boat and then once it's "in" the boat, click it from underneath to ride with it, right?

WRONG. Because the horse will not actually get in the boat for love or money.

He'll either hover on top as if the boat was a solid block or, if I try to nudge him into alignment with the boat, he'll bounce off, sending both the horse and the boat drifting into the deep water where I have to chase them down and retrieve them.

What the heck am I missing?

ETA: Okay, it turns out that's not a thing specifically in Minecraft Java edition, but thanks to those who elected to be giant galloping shitstains about a pretty reasonable question. Appresh.

I got on horse and jumped onto the boat.

This is what happened.

So the horse seems to take up both "seats" in the boat.

I tried to right click the boat so I could pilot it, but every time I tried I ended up on the back of the horse again. Doing a jump with the horse made the horse jump out of the boat though, so getting a horse INTO a boat and OUT of a boat is pretty easy... just jump in and jump out.

Then I tried something different. I dived into the water and then I right clicked the boat from underneath the water (clicking the bottom of the boat)

SUCCESS!

You CAN transport horses in a boat!

All you have to do is ride horse, jump into boat and then dive under water and right click the boat from underneath.

Since 1.9, boats can supposedly transport two entities... I can not for the life of me get my horse into the boat.

Can it be done? If yes how? What about a donkey? If not, which animals can be transported, which can not?
