USMNT starting XI

Gregg Berhalter revealed his starting lineup already, with questions remaining only as to whether Robinson is healthy to start or Joe Scally will take his place.

Storylines

USMNT: This is a huge test for the U.S. It will be the toughest match they face all summer, going up against a veteran squad with a good portion of the players having World Cup experience. Nobody on this USMNT has ever played in the World Cup, so this game could tell us plenty. The Americans must be ready for Uruguay's physical play, how good they are at shielding the ball, and how they love playing to a striker with a back to goal, meaning the center backs must close down quickly and apply pressure from behind. An aging defense for Uruguay could open up a window for the USMNT's speed in attack to make a difference, but they will have to play clean. On the team news front, Berhalter said McKennie will start but will be capped at 45 minutes.

Uruguay: There has been a lot of change to this team since the last World Cup. Legendary manager Oscar Tabarez is gone, having been replaced by former Inter Miami coach Diego Alonso. The former Valencia player made a name for himself coaching in Mexico but had a brief stint in MLS before landing the job of his country's national team. Since he's been on board, he took them from the outside looking in when it comes to World Cup qualifying to having booked a ticket fairly comfortably. This squad he has features many of the veterans like Diego Godin, Martin Caceres, Matias Vecino and Edinson Cavani, but there are young, rising superstars. Darwin Nunez is the next great Uruguayan striker, Facundo Pellistri is a touted young attacker at Manchester United (he was on loan at Alaves last season), and the midfield features established players like Champions League winner Federico Valverde of Real Madrid and River Plate's Nicolas de la Cruz. Uruguay have won their last five games and have only conceded once.

Prediction

Just too much quality in attack is the difference as a defense-Uruguay get a couple goals on the counter. Pick: Uruguay 2, USA 1

Social Media:

One of the fastest growing sides in terms of popularity and potential, the United States is on the come up in the soccer world. With players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams playing for major European sides, the USMNT is a force to be reckoned with.

Looking back at the history of the U.S. in international soccer, potential was not the common descriptor. Despite finishing third at the inaugural World Cup in 1930, The U.S. failed to qualify for the competition from 1954 to 1986. Then, it reached each World Cup from 1990 to 2014, before a stunning failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup sent shockwaves through the U.S. Soccer Federation.

USMNT TV schedule and streaming links

With the jumble of providers and channels responsible for broadcasting USMNT games in the United States, it can be hard to track the USMNT TV schedule. For example, look at the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying cycle. FOX and ESPN split USMNT home games. Meanwhile, Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network broadcast all of the side’s away games.

Some competitions are locked in for the near future. The USMNT will be on FOX for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Gold Cup and Copa America are also on FOX. Friendlies can be on ESPN, ABC, CBS or its family of networks.

A good option is fuboTV, which allows access to those channels at home or on the go.

USMNT Lineup

National team lineups can be tricky. Unlike the club game where each team has generally 25 names to choose from, there are so many internationals representing the United States.

Looking just at the summer of 2021, the United States used seemingly different squads for the Nations League semifinal and final and the Gold Cup. Gregg Berhalter, as well as other international managers, must mix in experience, youth, players on form and leaders to get the best out of his side.

This lineup is, of course, subject to change. However, it is one potential formation that USMNT fans could see at Qatar 2022.

One thing that Gregg Berhalter did well was use a variety of players throughout CONCACAF competitions and World Cup Qualifying. Injuries to star players forced his hand, but it worked well in the end.

He has options across the pitch. Goalkeeper will be a major talking point, with any of Matt Turner, Zack Steffen or Ethan Horvath playing the role. Walker Zimmerman and Miles Robinson seem to be the go-to options at the back, with Chris Richards also there.

The midfield is fairly deep in terms of usage. Kellyn Acosta, Luca de la Torre and Yunus Musah played strong roles in the qualifying cycle.

One glaring issue for the USMNT is that of striker. A reliable No. 9 eludes Berhalter, with Ricardo Pepi looking to be a viable option, provided he is on form. Jordan Morris Jesus Ferreira are examples of replacements.
