The Vampire Diaries fans were shocked to learn that Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, was leaving before season 7. Like many other actors, Dobrev decided it was time to part ways with Elena. How the show wrote off Elena Gilbert
Since Nina Dobrev gave her two weeks’ notice to The Vampire Diaries, the writers were able to give her a worthy sendoff.
Kai cast a spell in the season 6 finale that linked Elena and Bonnie. As a result, Elena was rendered unconscious while Bonnie lived. The spell made it so that only one of them could be awake. So, Kai forced Damon to choose between his girlfriend and his best friend. And, in typical Damon fashion, he ripped off Kai’s head, but the spell remained.
Elena decided to let Bonnie live out her life, and she would awake once Bonnie had died. She bid her goodbyes, and that was the last fans saw of Elena until the series finale.
Nina Dobrev returned to play Elena and Katherine Pierce in the series finale of The Vampire Diaries. Bonnie broke their spell, and Elena woke up. She and Damon, who became human, lived out their lives together and married. After some time, Elena died and crossed over to the afterlife, where she reunited with her parents, Aunt Jenna, and Uncle John.
Nina Dobrev described leaving ‘The Vampire Diaries’ as ‘bittersweet’
During an interview with SELF Magazine, Nina Dobrev discussed exiting The Vampire Diaries after six years. The actor revealed that she wasn’t scared to say goodbye, but it was bittersweet.
“I’ve loved working on this show,” Dobrev shared. “It’s been such a crazy, awesome adventure, and I’ve been surrounded by so many people who I consider family. I know this is a new exciting step in the right direction for me, but it’s going to be so strange not to be with them.”
She added, “It’s important for me that it be epic and powerful. I feel like I’m a completely different person than I was, and I’ve grown so much. It’s been a big part of my life, and I want it to be beautiful. I want it to end well.”

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Season 7 saw the heroes reconstructing without Elena. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) battled heartbreak and relied on his fractious yet intimate bond with Bonnie (Kat Graham). Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice King) began their romance, which was hampered by Caroline’s duty as a surrogate mother to Alaric’s (Matt Davis) young twins.

Description
In Season 1, Elena was still grieving her parents’ deaths when she met Stefan Salvatore. Elena loves Stefan. Elena soon discovers Stefan and Damon are vampires. Elena realizes she was adopted by John Gilbert, her “uncle,” and Isobel Flemming, Alaric’s wife.

Damon told Elizabeth to switch off her humanity after Jeremy’s death in Season 4 to soothe her anguish. Rarely do vampires create a sire link with their turner according to how powerful their human feelings were. After a short while, Damon and Matt helped her restore her humanity.
Katherine possess Elena’s body during Season 5 to avoid the Cure’s consequences. When Katherine died, she infected Elena’s body with a dangerous infection, but this was eventually cured. It took Elena’s friends a time to discover Katherine’s lie.
She and Damon briefly reunited late in the season. Damon, Elena, and Caroline devised a plot to bring Stefan and others back from The Other Side using a spell the Travelers had used to get back their leader, Markos. Elena and her friends were grieved by their impending deaths when the enchantment was interrupted before Damon could pass through the Anchor, Bonnie.
In Season 6, Elena abused medications to hallucinate Damon after his death. These medications increased her bloodlust, so she erased her memories of loving Damon.
After losing their memories, she saw him as the selfish and egotistical killer of her brother. When Damon returned, she decided to give him another chance. She starts dating him again after seeing him try to rescue Bonnie from prison. She subsequently takes Bonnie’s prison cure in hopes of having a family and a future with Damon.
Kai interrupts Jo and Alaric’s wedding and sleep-links Elena to Bonnie. She lets Bonnie live till it’s her turn. She says farewell to her friends and family but knows she’ll see Damon, Stefan, and Caroline again.
History
Elena grew up in the Gilbert family home at 2104 Maple Street. During the fourth season, she went to the Salvatore Boarding House after her brother joined The Five and developed an insatiable need to kill vampires. Elena burnt the Gilbert house after Jeremy’s death. She then lived at the Salvatore Boarding House for a few months before heading to Whitmore College.
She was a cheerleader, honor student, and popular student at Mystic Falls High from Seasons 1 to 4. Elena wants to be a writer and keeps a diary of her life. The adoptive mother gave ten-year-old Elena her first diary. In Season 5, she attended Whitmore College; in Season 6, she enrolled in pre-med to become a doctor.
Elena would have slept till Bonnie died because Kai Parker put her to sleep. Bonnie woke her up, and she rejoined her friends. Elena said goodbye to Stefan before marrying Damon. Elena became a doctor before dying at old age and reunited with her adopted parents, Grayson and Miranda, aunt Jenna, and biological father, John.
Elena is the last surviving Petrova and Gilbert.

Elena has an oval face, light olive complexion, almond-shaped brown eyes, and long dark brown hair. She’s 5’6″ (168 cm) tall and slim/athletic. Elena’s ancestor, Katerina Petrova, regularly poses as Elena to mislead others. Even though Elena and Katherine look the same, they have different styles and personalities.

Elena’s fashion taste is informal, sporty, and “girl next door”; she doesn’t wear much makeup or favor fashionable attire until attending a formal function. Elena wears dark blue jeans, t-shirts, and Converse. Elena wears stylish clothes on special occasions. Katherine’s style is high-maintenance, pricey, and stylish.
Elena wears her hair straight with a center part, which Katherine dislikes, while Katherine wears hers curly. Katherine straightens her hair to impersonate Elena. As a human, Elena wore a necklace of vervain, which is Esther’s unbreakable talisman. Stefan gave it to her to protect her from compulsion.
New Elena
Elena, a newly-turned vampire, wears a lapis lazuli daylight ring fashioned by Bonnie. Elena wears skirts and boots instead of jeans and t-shirts. Elena wears more jewelry now that she can accessorize. In season 4, Elena wears more jewelry. She looks more womanly after abandoning her humanity. She curls her red-streaked hair. She wears belts and skirts. Katherine removed Elena’s red streaks.
Elena as Katherine
Elena impersonates Katherine in American Gothic. She’s briefly fooled Elijah by changing her style. Elena swaps her comfortable boots for high heels and denim jacket for leather and takes Katherine’s glittering earrings, bracelets, and watch. Rebekah says Elena uses “sluttier” eye shadow and eyeliner to pass as Katherine. Elena and Katherine look the same, yet their personalities, mannerisms, style, and makeup distinguish them.
Elena wears more tight jeans, low-heeled boots, combat boots, sleeveless blouses, leather jackets, short skirts and ultra-short shorts, dresses, cosmetics, and jewelry in Season 5.
