Bouchette: Greatest send-off in Steelers (or even Pittsburgh sports) history?

Never has one Steelers player gone out the way Ben Roethlisberger did Monday night. Not Terry Bradshaw, not Joe Greene, not Franco Harris, not Jack Lambert, not Troy Polamalu. None of them was afforded the opportunity to take the kind of final home bow that was accorded Big Ben.

All of those players except maybe Greene did not even know it was his final home game when it occurred. The closest was Rocky Bleier’s finale at Three Rivers Stadium on Dec. 14, 1980, when everyone knew he was retiring and he received a thundering ovation after he ran for his final touchdown. But it was nothing like this.

Lloyd: Why this felt like Baker Mayfield’s last game with the Browns

It sure feels like Monday night’s disaster might have marked the final time Baker Mayfield will wear a Browns jersey.

If this turbulent marriage between Mayfield and the Browns is indeed headed for a divorce, it’s going to be one hell of a discovery process. Both sides have valid complaints.

Kaboly: Steelers fans deserve pat on back for Big Ben farewell performance

Even though the Steelers kept their faint playoff hopes alive with a convincing 26-14 win over the Browns, that wasn’t the story at Heinz Field on Monday night. It was Ben Roethlisberger’s final game in front of the home crowd and whatever frustrations the faithful had with their quarterback since that 11-0 start a year ago was all forgiven.

Steelers fans showed up, showed out and showed the NFL how to celebrate the career of their Hall of Fame quarterback that had to make 31 other fan bases jealous.

Browns continue to disappoint

The Browns were eliminated from playoff contention 30 or so hours before kickoff in large part because their offense has sputtered since Week 6. For six-plus weeks now, the passing game has been completely broken.

While nobody was expecting a magic reversal of that trend, the Browns were supposed to be able to run the ball against a struggling Steelers defense that ranked near the bottom leaguewide in every major category and had given up 100-plus rushing yards in eight straight games.

But the Browns were in the shotgun and had quarterback Baker Mayfield in an empty formation by their third play of Monday night’s game. And empty is a good way to describe a lot of what the Browns delivered in the three-plus hours that followed.

First Thoughts: Beleaguered Baker Mayfield harassed, sacked 9 times as Browns fall to Steelers

{{monthName}} {{day}}, {{year}} at {{hour12}}:{{minuteTwoDigit}} {{dayPeriod}}

Steelers' streak will continue

The victory against the Browns pushed Pittsburgh to 8-7-1 and assured them of an 18th consecutive non-losing season. That's the third-longest streak all-time behind the 2001-19 New England Patriots (19 seasons) and 1965-85 Dallas Cowboys (21).

Monday night's win put the Steelers one ahead of the previous holder of the third longest streak, the 1957-73 ... Browns.

Steelers defeat Browns on an emotional night

Who won the pittsburgh steelers game today

Ben Roethlisberger threw a touchdown pass and Najee Harris set career highs in carries and rushing yards to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 26-14 win in the Week 17 Monday night football game.

It wasn’t a stellar performance for Roethlisberger in what is likely the last game he will ever play at Heinz Field, but 28 carries for 188 yards and a touchdown by Harris kept the Steelers offense moving well enough to rack up four Chris Boswell field goals in addition to the two touchdowns.

Pittsburgh’s defense also had one of its best games of the 2021 season, holding Cleveland to a meager 3.5 yards per play average on 67 plays. Baker Mayfield did throw touchdown passes to David Njoku and Harrison Bryant, but he also threw two interceptions and was sacked nine times. T.J. Watt tallied four of those sacks to give him an NFL high 21.5 sacks for the season. Watt is now only one sack away from tying the all-time single season record in that category (22.5, by Michael Strahan in 2001).

The win keeps the Steelers playoff hopes alive, as a victory next week combined with an Indianapolis loss to Jacksonville would give Pittsburgh a postseason berth.

Bouchette: What to keep in mind about this Steelers game

It’s been all Ben Roethlisberger all the time around Pittsburgh as the quarterback plays what promises to be his final game at Heinz Field Monday night. But there’s something still at stake for the Steelers — a playoff berth. They must beat the Browns tonight and the Ravens on Sunday. If that happens and the Colts lose at Jacksonville, the Steelers will get in. Other outcomes to any of those three games and Pittsburgh is out.

Many expect Roethlisberger to have a big game because of his Heinz finale, but something else must happen for that to occur — his offensive line will have to give him more time to throw, and the run game will have to do much better. While Ben hasn’t been at his best this season, he’s also been limited because the line just has not been up to snuff.

At 39, he can’t avoid the pressure the way he once did, and the weak line has only enhanced that inability. He also has not been able to turn to the run to take some pressure off. Unless that changes, bowing out at Heinz Field for Ben Roethlisberger could be more painful than celebratory.

Kaboly: What to expect from the Steelers against the Browns:

If Kevin Stefanski calls more than five passing plays against the Steelers tonight, he should be fired on the spot. Now, that might be a little extreme, but it is also somewhat fair when you consider the run defense that his team will be facing tonight.

Starting inside linebackers Joe Schobert and Devin Bush are on the reserve/COVID-19 list, further complicating the Steelers' inability to stop the run behind a depleted defensive line. They've allowed eight consecutive games of at least 100 rushing yards over the past two months, with four opponents reaching at least 198 yards.

The last opponent that didn't go over 100 yards was the Browns on Halloween (96). Cleveland threw the ball 31 times and ran it 23 times that game. The Steelers need a repeat performance in terms of stopping the run (or the Browns thinking the passing game is a better option) to win this one.

Stats to know for the Browns

Baker Mayfield has not had the season he hoped for, but he is close to an early career milestone nonetheless. Mayfield needs 175 yards passing to become the eighth player in NFL history with 3,000 or more passing yards and 15 or more touchdown passes in each of his first four seasons.

Teammate Nick Chubb is looking for this third consecutive game with at least 90 yards and a touchdown rushing. He has at least 75 scrimmage yards in four of his past five games against the Steelers and is looking for his fourth consecutive Monday Night Football game with 95 or more scrimmage yards. He is the only player in the NFL at least 950 rushing yards each of the past four seasons. And his backfield mate Kareem Hunt, who's back from injury for this game, has 50 or more scrimmage yards in five of six career games vs. Pittsburgh.

Finally, receiver Jarvis Landry is looking for his third consecutive game against the Steelers with five or more catches and 50 or more receiving yards.

Najee Harris continues to impress

Who won the pittsburgh steelers game today

In last week's disappointing loss to the Chiefs, Najee Harris was arguably the lone bright spot for the Steelers' offense. Harris accounted for 110 scrimmage yards — 93 on the ground and 17 through the air — making it his eighth game with over 100 scrimmage yards this season, most among rookies.

In the Week 8 matchup between the Steelers and Browns, Harris looked as comfortable as he has all season. He rushed for 91 yards, a touchdown and caught five passes for 17 yards in the 15-10 win over Cleveland on Halloween night.

Harris currently leads all rookies with 1,406 scrimmage yards (984 rushing, 422 receiving) and ranks second with nine overall TDs thus far. He now has the most scrimmage yards by any Pittsburgh rookie. The Steelers will undoubtedly need him to continue at this pace tonight against a stifling Browns' defense.

Browns' Myles Garrett still dangerous on defense

Myles Garrett may have lost some steam as a defensive player of the year candidate, but he’s still an elite player. The Browns defensive lineman ranks first in the NFL in pass-rush win rate and first in Pro Football Focus’ grading system.

Falling behind in the race for the sacks title, it will be tough to catch up against a Steelers team that gets rid of the ball faster than any other team in the NFL. Ben Roethlisberger’s time to throw of 2.28 seconds is faster than any other quarterback in the past five years — except Roethlisberger in 2020. Still, he does present some sack opportunities and the Browns overall do a great job of getting into the backfield.

Garrett might not be the top contender for DPOY anymore, but he’s still one of the game’s best and could quickly put himself back into the conversation.

No color rush in tonight’s matchup, as the Steelers are going with their classic black jerseys and gold pants.

Mediocre defenses on display tonight?

Despite featuring two of the best pass rushers in the NFL in Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt, neither the Browns nor the Steelers are in the top half of defensive performance by expected points per play or points allowed per game. Some of that has to do with other elements of the front seven for each team as well as average to below-average performances in both secondaries. But it does call into question some of the value of edge rushers with gaudy stats and incredible presence. Either way, expect more points from each offense than one typically sees, even though both quarterbacks have struggled of late.
