Assassin’s Creed Valhalla - Who is the Grantebridge traitor?

When the Saxons retook Grantebridge, they were led by a traitor through a secret tunnel that only Soma and her three trusted advisors - Galinn, Birna, and Lif - knew existed.

That means that one of Soma’s best warriors and closest friends defected to help the Saxon cause.

After saving Galinn, Birna, and Lif from the swamps around the town and helping the clan retake their home, Evior has a new task at hand.

To uncover the turncoat, Eivor must investigate the scene, then raid with each of the three warriors to learn more about their possible motives.

Investigate the Grantebridge tunnel

After you speak to Soma, you can find the secret tunnel inside the Grantebridge longhouse, at the back.

Climb down the ladder and use Odin’s Sight as you go.

At the tunnel entrance, you’ll be able to identify a yellow cross and some footprints and drops of paint leading away.

Follow the trail and it will lead you to the discarded paint and a longboat launch by the river. Remember this information and continue onto the raid quests.

Raid with Birna, Lif, and Galinn

Across your raids with Soma’s three advisors, you come across the following evidence:

  • Galinn believes he is destined for greatness from the Gods
  • Galinn is fantatical about his visions above all else
  • Birna has an unrequited love for Soma
  • Lif is in charge of the clan’s longboats - like the one you found at the river
  • Lif paints said longboats using yellow paint - but claims it was stolen
  • Lif also wishes he had put himself forward to lead Grantebridge, and disagrees with how Soma rules

Uncovering the Traitor

During his raid quest, Lif makes his motives for turning on Soma quite clear. But doesn’t that feel a little too easy?

If you believe Lif that the yellow paint was stolen, and add that to what you found at the entrance to the secret tunnel, it would suggest that one of the other two warriors is the traitor.

Now think back to what happened when you first rescued Galinn, Birna, and Lif from the swamp.

Birna and Lif were both surrounded by other members of Soma’s clan, separated from the main group. If they had fled from the secret entrance with the paint and left by boat, all of their crew would have been part of the deception.

However when you found Galinn, he was alone, and only trapped where he was by a pack of wolves.

Using this logic, you can deduce that Galinn is the Grantebridge traitor.

Fuelled by the lust for power he felt was foretold in his visions, he sold Soma and the others out to the Saxons for a chance at glory.

Outcomes

If you choose the correct traitor - Galinn - then Soma will be pleased with your help and a character will join the Raven clan and your crew.

If you choose the wrong traitor - either Birna or Lif - then after you’ve defeated Wigmund you’ll have to face an additional boss battle, and the character will not join your clan.

Soma will still forge an alliance with the Ravens, but will not hold you in as high regard, and will feel guilty as well as burdened by leadership.

Either way, she rewards you with the Blodwulf shield - an incredible item which has a chance to imbue your weapon with fire damage on every parry. It’s one of the best weapons around in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

If you haven’t done so already, now it’s time to pledge yourself to Ledecestrescire and help the Ragnarssons defeat King Burgred and his thegn, Leofrith.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is now available on current and next-gen systems as well as PC, and a lot of the talk about has been about romance options and how to ensure your male or female Eivor gets busy. But, away from blatant dialogue choices which determine whether you romance someone or avoid their lips as if it were the plague, there’s also choices that have significant ramifications involving death. One of these grisly scenarios has resulted in people asking who is the traitor that betrayed Soma, and here you’ll discover if the traitor is Lif, Burna, or Galinn.

Some controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Valhalla involves supposed ‘ableist’ language, but most of the reviews have been positive in regard to the game’s story and characters. Whether you play as female or male, Eivor is a great protagonist despite the dude version always appearing as though he’s on the verge of tears, and all the other characters and NPCs are great as well.

If you’ve become attached to the story and are struggling to decide who should be executed between Galinn, Lif, or Burna, below you’ll discover the identity of the traitor that betrayed Soma.

Who is the traitor that betrayed Soma in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?

The traitor that betrayed Soma in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is Galinn.

Lif and Burna are selectable suspects in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but Galinn is the true traitor that betrayed Soma.

If you correctly choose the destiny obsessed weasel, he’ll deny his crimes but the badass Soma will slit his throat anyways.

Lif and Burna will also protest their innocence if you choose either of them, but a slit throat remains the end result. This makes it imperative that you get the choice right so that a jealous but innocent being and hopeless lover don’t receive an undeserved and cold death.

While there are clues that help you determine that Galinn is the true traitor that betrayed Soma, the undeniable evidence is him admitting it himself later on if you chose to kill Burna or Lif instead.

If you didn’t kill Galinn, he will later attempt to kill either Burna or Lif (depending on who is alive), and this will result in you having to fight him.

The bad ending for getting the traitor wrong is Soma saying that she doesn’t blame you as she wielded the blade herself, but she will proceed to trust no one.

Meanwhile, if you correctly ousted Galinn as the traitor, the good ending is sees Soma blow loads of smoke up your butt.

In Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Soma, the leader of Grantebrigescire, was betrayed by one of her inner circle. It falls to Eivor to find the traitor.

In Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Soma, the leader of Grantebridgescire, has been betrayed by one of her inner circle. One of them allowed the enemy to sneak into Grantebridge and attack without warning. Soma and her people were driven into the nearby swamps. Were it not for the timely intervention of Eivor, Grantebridge and Grantebridgescire as a whole would remain under Saxon control (and under the thumb of the Order of the Ancients). But who actually betrayed Soma in AC Valhalla?

[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.]

Someone from Soma's inner circle - Birna, Lif, or Galinn - showed the invading army the secret passage underneath the Longhouse that allowed them to strike at the heart of the village. It falls to Eivor to deduce who the traitor is in AC Valhalla, but this proves more difficult than it initially seems. Each of them has a reason to want to betray her, and there is evidence that points toward each of them. In the end, gathering all the clues mounts much more evidence against one of them.

To figure out the traitor in the "Stench of Treachery" quest, players will need to look to Galinn. He is the only one who wasn't accounted for before or during the attack, and most of the possible evidence gathered points toward him. Confirming it will involve questioning witnesses, talking to the suspects, and hunting around the village and nearby swamps for clues about who betrayed Soma in Assassin's Creed Valhalla's story.

How To Find Out Who Betrayed Soma In AC Valhalla

Questioning the townsfolk reveals that two of the lieutenants were witnessed in the village either before or during the attack. Birna was seen drinking in the Longhouse, and Lif was seen fighting after the Saxons attacked. Questioning both Lif and Birna will have them confirm these stories. If Eivor in Assassin's Creed Valhalla has a high enough charisma, Galinn will claim that he was meditating far from the village at the time of the attack. Another witness claims to have seen someone running away from the village before the attack, and another still claims that one of the longships wasn't where it usually was.

To uncover physical proof, Eivor must recreate the traitor's path from the night of the attack. Starting at the secret tunnel beneath the Longhouse, Eivor finds an "X" marking on a wall near the outer entrance, as well as a trail of paint spatters leading away. Eivor deduces that the traitor painted the X as a marking to mark the entrance. Following the trail of paint spatters, Eivor uncovers a bucket of yellow paint hidden in a tree stump. Following the river north of the village (but not too far unless players want to try and defeat Goneril in Assassin's Creed Valhalla), Eivor will come across a longship painted yellow. The poem carved into it references Galinn. Following a trail of bodies leads to the area where Eivor rescued Galinn previously. In the hamlet near the longship, a note from Wigmund can be found saying that the yellow longship is not to be harmed.

Once the evidence is collected, Eivor can go to Soma and accuse one of the inner circle. Soma will then gather the three and execute the one that was accused. She will thank Eivor before making her way to the Isle of Ely to find Wigmund. If someone other than Galinn is accused of betraying Soma, Soma still executes them. This affects the following mission, as Galinn will hold the other remaining member of the inner circle hostage. The encounter ends with both Galinn and the other member dead. This shows that choices matter in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, as betrayal could have lethal consequences.
