Who is the quarterback for the chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs, unlike many NFL teams, do not have any concerns about the quarterback positions. Some teams are looking at draft classes or free agents, wondering who will captain their offense. Luckily, the Chiefs have a generational talent in Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs went all-in to draft Mahomes, and their investment paid off. Mahomes showed out in a Week 17 start. Veteran Alex Smith mentored Mahomes for his full rookie season. The rest is history from there.

Mahomes has reached several career firsts and is among the NFL’s best quarterbacks of all time. If fans want to compare his career trajectory to greats like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees, they can. While the race for the NFL’s QB1 has gotten more crowded lately, Mahomes still has career milestones, achieved or soon-to-be reached, that other quarterbacks cannot match.

If Mahomes’ Week 17 start in his rookie year was any signal, he hit the ground running, to say the least. He earned MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 2018, a career-defining feat for any player. Mahomes’ hot start has put him in elite company, with only Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

If Mahomes exceeds 4,000 passing yards in 2022, he and Manning will be the only quarterbacks in league history to reach that production in five of their first six years. That feat is all the more impressive considering that Mahomes only made one appearance in his first year.

While the NFL developed and adopted the passer rating metric in 1973, no other quarterback has a better career passer rating than Mahomes. His 105.8 passer rating leads all quarterbacks with at least 10 career starts.

Notably, the AFC West’s four active starting quarterbacks have top-25 career marks. That is the NFL’s only division with such a high standard of quarterback play.

Mahomes does have a slim 1.3-point lead over Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but Mahomes is setting the bar for quarterback play entering his sixth season.

3. The best winning percentage among active quarterbacks

From individual play to team success, Mahomes continues to excel. He has a 50-13 record as a starter, good for a 79.4% winning percentage. That mark is the best among active quarterbacks with at least 10 career starts.

And those are just his regular season wins. Mahomes’ eight postseason wins tie him with the likes of Dan Marino, Steve Young, and Eli Manning. While Mahomes, or any quarterback, will likely never exceed Brady’s 35 postseason wins, Mahomes is already one of the best. It doesn’t matter if it is September or January.

4. NFL record for passing yards per game

Some of the NFL’s all-time best quarterbacks were not asked to air the ball out all the time. But Mahomes has been the best at doing it week in and week out. He averages 301.4 passing yards per game, which leads all quarterbacks with at least 10 career starts. Fellow young uns like Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow average at least 280 passing yards per game but are still well behind Mahomes.

In what has become an annual tradition, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has released a hype video for the upcoming season just hours before kickoff.

The hype video produced by David Kushner of Labsixgroup and Andy Torres of Andy Torres Films features some imagery, sound and music from the latest season of the popular Netflix series, “Stranger Things.” It opens up with Vecna’s clock ticking to NFL kickoff, which is perhaps a little nod at Mahomes’ “Grim Reaper” nickname.

It’s the beginning of a new era for the Chiefs’ star quarterback in Kansas City, and this video serves as a reminder that Mahomes and the rest of the team are up to the task. It doesn’t shy away from the disappointment of the AFC title game loss last season, opening up with Mahomes’ comments on learning from the mistakes made in that game and starting off the 2022 NFL season on the right foot.

They’re out to set things right and continue their winning ways during the upcoming season, and this video should serve to get you hyped for that.

Who is the quarterback for the chiefs

  • Mahomes completed 20 of 35 passes for 262 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the Chiefs' 20-17 loss to the Colts on Sunday. He also rushed four times for 26 yards. The star signal-caller was unable to work his magic Sunday against a desperate Colts team looking for its first win. Mahomes did display some good rapport with his top two wideouts in JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, hitting the duo on nine occasions for 137 yards on 15 targets. Mahomes also connected with Travis Kelce for his one touchdown pass from three yards out late in the first quarter. However, Mahomes was directly responsible for short-circuiting his team's final chance at a win, as his final pass of the day, intended for Smith-Schuster, was picked off by Rodney McLeod at the Colts' 36-yard line with two seconds remaining. Mahomes will look to regroup in time for a Week 4 road showdown against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.

  • Mahomes completed 24 of 35 passes for 235 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed twice for minus-1 yard in the Chiefs' 27-24 win over the Chargers on Thursday night. Mahomes' yardage total left plenty to be desired from a fantasy standpoint, particularly after his breakout 360-yard Week 1 effort. However, the star signal-caller turned in a solid performance in which he managed to avoid turnovers while completing his pair of scoring tosses to the unlikely duo of Jerick McKinnon and Justin Watson, the latter on a beautiful 41-yard throw across the middle on the run in the third quarter. Mahomes recorded completions to nine different targets overall, and his impeccable ball security was key to allowing the Chiefs to mount a comeback from a 17-7 deficit. Mahomes and his teammates now get some extra time off before a Week 3 road showdown with the Colts a week from Sunday.

  • Mahomes said Tuesday that his left wrist was a little sore following Sunday's 44-21 win over the Cardinals, but he feels better now and isn't in any jeopardy of missing Thursday's Week 2 matchup with the Chargers, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports. Mahomes injured the wrist early in Sunday's contest and then had it taped up, but the extra bandaging didn't seem to hinder his play, as he completed 30 of 39 pass attempts for 360 yards and five touchdowns during the blowout win. Kansas City is listing Mahomes on its Week 2 injury report while he continues to receive treatment, but he was estimated as a full participant Monday, and head coach Andy Reid said the franchise quarterback will be a "full go" for Tuesday's practice session, per Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star. With that in mind, Mahomes isn't in line to carry a designation into Thursday's contest, and fantasy managers shouldn't have much hesitation about including him in lineups for what could be one of the higher-scoring matchups of Week 2.

  • Mahomes completed 30 of 39 passes for 360 yards and five touchdowns in Sunday's 44-21 win over the Cardinals. He added five yards on three carries. The franchise quarterback made it clear very quickly the Kansas City offense would be just fine without Tyreek Hill. Mahomes set a new personal record by completing 12 straight passes at one point, and he found nine different receivers over the course of the game. The 26-year-old remains exceptional in Week 1 contests -- in five season openers during his career so far, he's completed 72.5 percent of his passes while averaging 308.4 yards and compiling an incredible 18:0 TD:INT. Mahomes did injure his left wrist while being tackled on his first TD pass on the day, but he played the rest of the game with his wrist wrapped, and the injury doesn't appear to be a serious one. Per Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, he'll undergo testing on his wrist before Kansas City begins prepping for its Thursday clash with the Chargers in Week 2.

  • Mahomes completed 12 of 19 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 24-14 preseason win over Washington. Mahomes played only two possessions but was dominant while in the game, capping them with touchdown passes of five and seven yards, both to Jody Fortson. The superstar quarterback looks like he's in midseason form, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Mahomes get the night off for Kansas City's preseason finale Thursday against the Packers.
