Who is leaving the resident 2022

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched “New Moon,” the May 17 episode of “The Resident.”

Not only did the Fox medical drama “The Resident” get renewed for a sixth season this week, a face from the past returned for emotional new scenes in on Tuesday’s season finale.

Nicolette “Nic” Nevin (Emily VanCamp) returned to the show to star in a several flashback scenes with Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry). The season began with her shocking death, leaving Conrad widowed and in charge of their young child together. Prior to VanCamp’s departure, where her character died after a brain injury in a car crash, she was a lead on the hit show.

The flashbacks all come from a night the couple had out shortly after the birth of Gigi, from anxiously greeting the babysitter at the beginning of the episode to hitting the dance floor at the bar, pointing to moments where Nic innocently accused Conrad of having crushes or flirting throughout the evening.

When Conrad confided to Winston (Stephen Wallem) about his grief and flashbacks, the latter urged him to listen to the messages: “Maybe you shouldn’t fight these memories. Maybe they’re trying to tell you something. The past never goes away. If you don’t deny it, you can learn from it.”

Tellingly, a third flashback came as Conrad was comforting potential love interest Cade (Kaley Ronayne) after she delivered the news to her father, Dr. Ian Sullivan (Andrew McCarthy), that he had pancreatic cancer. Daydreaming during his embrace with Cade, Conrad reassured Nic, after she misinterpreted a moment at the bar where he similarly comforted the wife of a sick patient. “You have nothing to be worried about,” he said.Y “You’re the only woman I’ve loved since the first moment I saw you, and I can’t imagine life without you.”

A brief fourth flashback showed the couple returning home to Gigi.

The episode’s end cut to the engagement party for Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) and Kitt Voss (Jane Leeves).

At one table, Cade and Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas) discussed how they were both just friends with Conrad, with Billie slyly adding a “…so far” at the end. Shady!

At another table, Conrad, lost in his thoughts and remembering dancing and playing pool with Nic at the bar, looked sad. But despite moping, Dr. Devon (Manish Dayal) urged him to cut loose, saying, “Maybe it’s time to make new memories.”

After another flashback where Conrad and Nic discussed what would happen if one of them died and who would take care of Gigi, with both encouraging the find love after the other has passed, Conrad took a sip of his drink and walked up to Cade and Billie at the bar — only for the scene to cut and leave us in the dark until next season. How cruel to leave us on such a cliffhanger, “The Resident”!

“The Resident” has been renewed for Season 6 at Fox.

The decision came down to the wire, with both “9-1-1” and “The Resident” without formal renewal announcements on Monday morning when Fox announced their 2022-2023 broadcast season slate. The network made their upfront pitch to advertisers later that same day.

Starring Matt Czuchry as Dr. Conrad Hawkins, the medical drama follows the doctors and nurses at Chastain Memorial Hospital as they face personal and professional challenges and fight for their patients’ health.

Along with Czuchry, “The Resident” cast includes Bruce Greenwood as Dr. Randolph Bell, Manish Dayal as Dr. Devon Pravesh, Malcolm-Jamal Warner as Dr. AJ Austin, Jane Leeves as Dr. Kit Voss, Jessica Lucas as Dr. Billie Sutton, Anuja Joshi as Leela Devi and Miles Fowler as Trevor.

At the beginning of the currently airing Season 5, series regular Emily VanCamp, who played Conrad’s wife and the mother of his young child, nurse Nicolette “Nic” Nevin, left “The Resident” after four seasons of playing the co-lead role. Her exit, which included the death of the character, came following fellow series-long actor Shaunette Renée Wilson stepping away from her role as Dr. Mina Okafor.

“The Resident” is executive produced by co-creator Amy Holden Jones, Peter Elkoff, Andrew Chapman, Rob Corn, Oly Obst and Antoine Fuqua. Showrunners include Chapman, Elkoff and Harthan.

The series hails from 20th Television.

“The Resident” first premiered as a midseason series in January 2018. With its renewal, it joins a lineup of Fox shows that will return for the 2022-2023 season, including freshman drama “The Cleaning Lady” and animated comedies “Bob’s Burgers,” “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons.”

Spoilers ahead for the March 29 episode of The Resident Season 5, called “6 Volts.”

The Resident returned with the first new episode in weeks, only to say goodbye to a character who was key to one of Season 5’s biggest storylines with Billie confronting her rapist. Miles Fowler returned for “6 Volts” as Trevor for an emotional reunion with his biological mom, and it looks like that will be their last interaction – at least on screen – for a while. He made a big decision about his future that will take him away from Chastain, but could he come back? Let’s look at what happened.

Trevor has been missing from the show ever since he took a break from the hospital in the aftermath of learning the truth about his biological father, and “6 Volts” revealed that Billie had been trying to get in touch with him and worrying about him for some time. When he finally returned her call, she let him know that he’s in danger of losing his spot at Chastain if he doesn’t come back soon, and their in-person reunion at the end of the hour revealed how he plans on coping with everything he learned about Billie and how he was conceived. Trevor said:

Okay, first, I’m not sure I want to be a doctor. I went into it for the wrong reasons. I wanted to be the person I thought you would love enough to wish you’d kept me. Now I realize you were a child. That’s why you couldn’t keep me. I know we both suffered. Right now, it feels like being a doctor won’t give me what it gives you. The good news is being an M.D. opens up a lot of opportunities. I got a job in research and development at a biotech startup. Drug chemistry – my sweet spot. But I’m gonna do it by the rules. Trying to make a difference. We’ll see what happens.

There may be some holes in his story, considering that it sure didn’t look like he was working that kind of job when he was on the phone with Billie, but he seemed calm and confident about his decision. If this is truly goodbye for Trevor, he got a fairly decent ending. He wasn’t killed off like Nic was or even given an off-screen exit like Cain after Morris Chestnut was cast in another Fox series.

Trevor may not be likely to return as a doctor to Chastain unless he has a change of heart (or if there’s more going on with his new job that has yet to be revealed), but he and Billie formed a strong bond. It’s possible that he could return just to visit his biological mom. Alternately, whatever he’s working on in research and development could bring him back to Chastain somehow. His departure felt fairly final in “6 Volts,” but it doesn’t have to last forever, and Billie had a touching speech for him:

I’m happy for you, Trevor. And I’m very proud. Since Porter, since giving you away, it had been inconceivable to me that I could ever feel maternal towards anyone. I never wanted kids. But you forced me to meet you and what had been inconceivable happened. Something opened up in me. These last couple of weeks, when I didn’t know where you were, what you were doing, I was beside myself with worry. Which I suspect means I was feeling a little bit like a real mother. You are my son. Nothing can ever change that. And I love you.

Whether or not The Resident brings back Miles Fowler as Trevor remains to be seen. Fortunately, the medical drama isn’t heading right into another break, but will return next week with a new episode called “The Space Between.” It will see Conrad treating one of Gigi’s classmates, and an episode featuring Gigi is always guaranteed to deliver some cuteness. Leela will run into another complication in the process of trying to help her sister (played by Anuja Joshi’s real-life twin sister) have a baby, which could add some new layers to the potential drama with Leela and Devon

Will Billie be ready to move forward in her life, with Trevor finding a new purpose? Sparks were flying between her and Conrad earlier in the season, so it’s possible that there will be some developments on that front, although only time will tell. Tune in to Fox on Tuesday, April 5 at 8 p.m. ET to see what The Resident has in store next in the 2022 TV schedule.

SPOILER ALERT: The following story reveals major plot points from the Season 5 finale of Fox’s The Resident.

Emily VanCamp made her return to Fox’s The Resident in the Season 5 finale tonight and while it was exciting to see Nic Nevin and Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) reunited, alas, it was only in flashbacks.

Conrad has been struggling with moving on romantically after losing the love of his life and the mother of his daughter, but memories could help him overcome some of that anxiety.

Throughout the episode, Conrad revisits the good ol’ days with Nic often getting lost in thought. While at a stoplight in the car with their daughter Gigi, he smiles as he snapped out of a daydream about a particular date with Nic.

He may never find the magic he did with Nic but he can surely love again and move on with his life, as she would want him to. And all of that is put into perspective when he chats with a patient who similarly lost a loved one suddenly.

Life is short.

Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) was deeply affected by the loss of his patient, a pregnant mother and wife, amid his planned exit from Atlanta in an attempt to put distance between him and Leela (Anuja Joshi). She may not have plans to have children, but he eventually realizes he’s breaking up a special relationship for an uncertain future.

Series executive producer Andrew Chapman broke down the events of the Season 5 finale via email with Deadline and he addressed whether or not fans could expect to see more of Nic via flashback in the future.

DEADLINE: What can you share about how you convinced VanCamp to return?

ANDREW CHAPMAN: Emily was game from the start. Because she had to drop out of the show so suddenly at the start of Season 5, she never really got a chance to say goodbye to the crew and cast in Atlanta. She wanted very much to do that. Also, she was excited to bring some closure to the Nic and Conrad relationship in the show. When we reached out to her to be involved in the season finale she jumped at the chance. She was great.

DEADLINE: What was the energy like on set when she and Matt reunited?

CHAPMAN: They seem like the ol’ Nic and Conrad fans know and love.
I wasn’t there, but show creator Amy Holden Jones was, and she said that the energy on set was very powerful. The last scene that Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp shot when Nic and Conrad are in bed together discussing what life would be like if one of them died, had everyone on the verge of tears.

DEADLINE: What are your plans for Conrad’s future?

CHAPMAN: We wanted to bring closure to the entire season with this episode, to finally have Conrad realize that he was emotionally ready to move on with his life. But we wanted to hold off on his making a choice on who to move with until season 6 when we could start a whole new storyline where Conrad goes in his love relationships. We have very specific plans for who he chooses in his love life, but you’ll have to tune in to season six to know what those plans are!

DEADLINE: Could Nic return via flashback again in the future?
CHAPMAN: This is it, no more plans for flashbacks with Emily.

DEADLINE: Is it safe to assume Devon is not leaving for Baltimore? What can you share about the future of his complicated relationship with Leela?

CHAPMAN: It’s safe to assume that Devon’s not leaving the hospital, not yet. But we want him to stay a superstar scientist, an ambitious young doctor with big plans. Those plans may still run afoul of his relationship with Leela.

DEADLINE: It looked like seeing her sister Padma (Aneesha Joshi) pregnant with twins might change things for Leela. Is that something you’re considering?

CHAPMAN: Yes, she may reconsider her future as a potential mother because of her sister, but she is also an ambitious young doctor with big plans, just like Devon. Ambitions and plans may yet clash with desires to stay a couple and become a family.

DEADLINE: Bell (Bruce Greenwood) was talking about Leela’s future and how he’s hoping to prep her to eventually take over his role. What can you share on that front?

CHAPMAN: We plan on delving deep into Bell’s move into teacher and mentor in Season 6. He is going to pass the torch of superstar general surgeon to Leela, the doctor he thinks best suited to handle all the pressures that role brings. We’re planning on having Season 6 be the ultimate redemption for Bell, a character who started the show, way back in Season 1, as a villain, and will now become a venerated teacher and mentor.

DEADLINE: Bell was put through the wringer this season. You guys know a thing or two about weddings. What are your plans for the Bell/Voss nuptials?

CHAPMAN: Yes, Weddings ‘R Us! Who doesn’t love a good wedding? We’re planning on having Bell and Kit Voss (Jane Leeves) get hitched very early in Season 6.

DEADLINE: How involved of a father will Raptor (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) be? Will this adorable baby help him heal from the loss of his mom? Will it bring him and Padma together again?

CHAPMAN: We think the idea of AJ Austin being a father to two small children while not being romantically involved with the mother of those children, is a very juicy storyline. We think parenting will help him heal from the loss of his mother, but we doubt it will turn him into a cuddlier version of the infamous, hard-edged Raptor. At least we hope it won’t!

DEADLINE: What stories are you hoping to tell next season?

CHAPMAN: We have a bunch of soapy storylines planned for Season 6: Conrad and his love life, Devon and Leela and their budding family, Kit and Bell’s wedding, Cade (Kaley Ronayne) and her narcissistic father (Andrew McCarthy), and Billie (Jessica Lucas) and her longing for Conrad.

But we also want to dive into our classic unaccountable medical storylines: addiction in the ranks of doctors, corruption of medicine through money, doctors allowed to practice when they shouldn’t, street violence, and its catastrophic effect on hospitals. Have no fear, The Resident will continue to tackle the problems in American healthcare in every episode.
