The sugar revolution began in the 17th century where there was a decline in the demand of tobacco and an increase in the demand of sugar. After discovering the Caribbean, Europeans saw to different means as providing labour. The indigenous people slowly became extinct due to over working and being under fed. They themselves were not capable of working in this tropical climate and hence saught to the indentured servants. however, they were also not capable as they were not immune to certain tropical diseases, they were not used to the harsh labour and climate. Europeans traded slaves from Africa to work on several plantations.

In the 17th century the English and French settlers changed the cash crop to Sugarcane. This transition from Tobacco to Sugarcane became known as the Sugar Revolution. It was called the Sugar Revolution because many changes occurred in the West Indies. The changes were social, economical and political. Sugar needed a large and permanent labour force. The labourers on the Sugar Plantation estate were obtained from West Africa in large numbers. They were brought to the caribbean as slaves by force and were treated cruelly by the Europeans

The sugar revolution was the change from tobacco to sugar in the Caribbean . This transformation was caused by a fall in tobacco sales leading to the need for a new crop. During the 17th century, Europe needed a sweetner and hence the colonizers chose to move from tobacco to sugar. The change to sugar meant that larger plantations were needed than those used for tobacco production. Larger acres of land meant more workers would be needed and so the African people were introduced to the Caribbean. This also meant machinery would needed for production, the profit from sugar production would be great for many plantation owners however many could not afford to purchase more land, machiney or workers that would be neccessary for production.

It must be noted that the Sugar Revoloution changed everything in the Caribbean, the economy, the political and social life. The Caribbean was also introduced to new cultral forms upon the arrival of the African people
