We relativized the assertion of Sao Paulo being considered the tomb of samba through the presence of the samba and the Carnival since the nineteenth century. Drawing on Bakhtin's reflections on language and society, we established a relation between the sambas and the representations of Sao Paulo. CARNIVAL; SAMBA SCHOOLS; DISCOURSE; SOCIETY; SAO PAULO.
